helix light

research project

2011

Helix light comprises a spherically shaped double helix form, reminiscent of the molecular structure of human DNA, where one helix carries the positive electrical current and the other the negative. The design draws further inspiration from traditional paper lantern construction and design.

The light uses an ‘Archimedean spiral’, where the gaps between the curves remain constant as the radius changes, enabling a universal LED module to link the helix’s together providing both form and structure to the design. The flexibility of the design enables various sizes to be created using the same common components.
